Drawings:
*When
you look at the drawings, you will
probably see scenes that look like some places you have been, and some places
you haven’t been. In the unfamiliar looking ones, can you still find something
that seems familiar in a way – something it has in common with people or places
here?
*Do you think the drawings would be more or less
interesting if the color were filled in realistically over the whole scene?
Showcase:
*How did Mutzy the Fisher’s fishing trip go?...what did he catch?
What does Stell the Shopper have in her shopping bag?...what do you think she shops for,
while she has gems at her feet?
*Why is Fend confused?
Which Spirit
Guide looks most like it can relate to you,
and could guide your spirit well?
*The Amulet bags, worn as medicine and charm bags have
been popular not only in Polish mythology, but in other cultures as well. Do you know what some of those cultures
might be?
Paintings:
*Congressman Thompson’s portrait uses symbols to
represent his journey into public service. The farm represents his home district, the agricultural community where
he grew up. The chapel represents the place he first heard Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr. speak, which made him realize his need to serve the public and work to
insure voting right. The capitol is
faintly seen in the background to represent the U.S. Capitol, where he serves office. What symbols would represent your journey?...Chose a symbol to represent each: your past, your
present, your future.
*There are symbols of chickens in the portrait of
Congressman Lewis. This is surprising to a lot of people. What symbol might your friends be surprised to see in a picture about
you?
*Viewers have had opposite reactions to the Angel
painting. Do you feel it is more healing or morbid?
*Did you ever stand on the sidewalk looking up at the
building tops, and see the clouds moving quickly over the roof tops? Did it make you feel a little off balance,
as if the building (and the Earth) was
moving fast, instead of the clouds? (And did it remind you that the Earth is
rotating, even though we don’t usually notice?) This was the inspiration for
many of these paintings.
Scavenger Hunt
Look for:
*1 Gargoyle
*2 horses falling
in battle
hints: One is in a drawing. One is in
a painting. The one in the painting is harder to see.
*3 diamonds
hints: They are white. They are only about
¼ inch tall. They are taken from a famous historic necklace incident.
*Find the place where salt was dropped onto green paint while it was still wet…
*Find the place where salt was dropped onto blue paint while it was still
wet...what kind of effect do you think that would leave?
*Wake Up Your Imagination!
These things are not painted realistically; you’ll have to look into the
abstract areas of paint and pull your own images out of the shapes. You may
even find things the artist didn’t intend. That’s good – Have fun with it.
Can you find a butterfly,
bird, fish, cross…what else?
