Visiting Artist Residencies

Marcene Glover teaches on a college level. She has been rostered with Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Southern Alleghenies Museum on Art, ArtsPath, and Art Smart, teaching residencies in several counties throughout Pennsylvania. Marcene believes that Arts Education nurtures curiosity and encourages self-expression while building confidence. Her students learn to capture their own likeness in expressive paintings that convey mood. She incorporates her interest in historic and cultural issues into her portrait work. Marcene's residencies show students how to take their personal experiences and feelings, and translate them into visual art.

Marcene works with Art Guilds and Museums to create a residency that's enriching to the community.

This consists of a few components, beginning with an Exhibit of Congressional portraits, or portraits of Society Leaders.

Marcene will give a Live Portrait Sitting demonstration, open to the public, or guests of the museum, at the exhibit opening reception. This portrait can be of a Mayor, Senator, Museum Director, or Special Honoree.

Museum guests can watch, during the residency, as Marcene paints the completed portrait began in the Live Sitting. This will then hang in the exhibit, joining the other portraits.

Workshops in the residency will interest a wide range of student and observer. Marcene will focus on Creativity and Portraiture. Her teaching style is refreshing to people at all levels of ability. She helps accomplished artists fine tune their portraiture skills, or gives them a new outlook that re-awakens a spark of creativity. And she is able to help non-artists discover talent and creativity they never knew they had.

These workshops can be used as a fund raiser for the museum, and they can generate the funds to have the Special Honoree Portrait gifted to the sitter, or to the Museum.

It is possible to have Marcene work with an Arts association, school, or community organization, in workshops that develop these individuals' creativity, and then hang the resulting paintings as part of the Exhibit. A theme, like Leadership, or Strength of Character, would be chosen to build this part of the Exhibit about, which works well with the themes in Marcene's paintings, for a very interesting community based collective Exhibit. click here to see details and examples.

During the residency Marcene will also make time to schedule other commissioned portraits. This gives the museum guests additional portrait demonstrations to observe.

Marcene's Teaching Philosophy

Our Voice:I believe that everyone has something to say, and Art is a natural expression of ideas. A good teacher can help a student find his voice through Art. Anyone who has the desire, can learn to draw, paint and sculpt. Alot of us are just discovering our talents later in life. It's never too late to make that exploration. Since the earliest civilizations, man has been finding ways to record ideas and communications visually (Sanscrit, Heiroglyphs...). Visual art is not only a record of our culture, but an expression of our individuality.
Cross-curricular Teaching: Scientists are now proving what those of us involved in the Art field have known for years - that participation in the Arts increases learning in other curriculum, such as Math, Science, Reading, and Social Studies. (Not to mention Art's neurological healing benifits that are also now being scientifically documented) I enjoy having the opportunity to work with teachers of these subjects to incorporate Art into their classrooms. Students' test scores improve from projects that specifically align PA Art standards with the standards in each other subject.
Symbolism in Art and Education: It's a great asset to have the congressional portraits in class. Aside from sparking topical discussions, they demonstrate how Representational Art can communicate political, historic, and cultural ideas.
