Dorie Sheridan
FIBER ARTIST
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Dorie is known as the Sculptress of Silk. She paints and sculpts silk into intriguing characters, that have a universal appeal.
Dorie's unique sculptures have been featured in regional exhibits, tourist boutiques, and the 1982 World's Fair. They've been commissioned by celebrities, including Mrs. Arnold Palmer and former First Lady Nancy Reagan, and are collected by U.S. Foreign Ambassadors.
Dorie's Wall Dolls are graced with charm, mystique and whimsy. They strike a familiar chord in a personal way to each viewer, evoking cultural richness, spiritual renewal, and/or making our hearts giggle. The people Dorie portrays are not meant to be recognizably from one particular time or place. Rather, they are for all of us to relate to, and feel connected.
Essence of Life Art is the partnership of Dorie and her daughter, Portrait Artist Marcene Glover. Their work can be seen by appointment, or in select galleries. Together they produce 2 and 3-dimensional works, on paper, canvas, silk, jewelry, and sculpture.

ARTIST STATEMENT
Silk Painting is unpredictable and uncontrollable and it is a joy to
experience. The brilliance and purity of colors, the fluid movement of the dyes
on silk, the vibrancy and immediacy of the medium are what draw me to silk
painting. It is a challenge to allow the silk to determine its destiny and at
the same time create a very personal expression of my own. There's an added
challenge and pleasure from creating vessels and sculptures from silk. The
challenge comes from having to overcome obstacles presented by the use of a
soft fabric. The pleasure comes in seeing each Butterfly King, Ishtar the Brave, Empress, and Spirit Guide immerge from the silk.
As far as the Knobbies, no one knows for certain in what part of the world they
reside - deep in the woods - under a tree - perhaps in the sky. I can only tell
you how they came to me. While I was on my sun-porch, between a dream and a
daydream, in the early evening when the sun is casting golden twilight shadows.
It is hard to know what is real in this illusive lighting, but this is how the
Royal Knobbies, as they like to be called, first appeared to me. They came out
timidly at first, and then boldly, as if leaving a lingering party.
I'm still not quite sure why wherever they walk pathways are lined with gems; but each time I gaze at the Royal Knobbies I imagine this is the time they will let me in on their secret.
