Facets in Culture, Faces in Government - Marcene Glover solo exhibit Portraying the Essence of People and Place

The culture of a community is defined by the events in its history and the goals and actions of its leaders. It is also made up of the beliefs, traditions, and memories of each of its citizens. These are some of the many facets to the personality of a society. Within the 40 pieces of art work in this exhibit are glimpses of these facets.
.....When looking at different cultures, we see distinct aesthetic qualities. But when we look past these apparent differences, we see common universalities to the human condition. The everyday universalities are portrayed in the drawings of To Market scenes and Mother & Child....

The more extreme conditions of struggles to celebration are portrayed in the scenes of battle and dance.
.....History is not stagnant; it builds. Each moment is not self-contained, but affects the next. As people we are influenced by the events that shape our society. We in turn react, and influence our community. This chain is expressed metaphorically in these paintings, as being carried by the wind, or the ripple of water.

.....Thus cultural winds ripple across time, revealing life's cadence, from strategies of battle, to rhythms of celebration.

Color Stream Drawings in Jocovitz Goldhaber Gallery
These pastel drawings celebrate the simplicity of an artful sketch and cut through the genre to find the essence of a people or place. They look to find a familiar connection in what may be an unfamiliar culture.

Essence-ology Paintings in Katter black box Theater
These mixed media paintings are influenced by Australian Aborigine Dreamtime thinking, that the past is relevant and ever present, communicating, mixing with the dynamic events, personalities and philosophies of today, as if carried by the wind, or these washes of paint.
Statues, buildings, and familiar objects can hold reference to historic events and ideologies. The artist finds parallels between strategies on the chess board, or fencing matches, and strategies in historic battle to be interesting. These paintings are about circular, not linear time, and ancestors staying with us. The saying is "if walls could talk". Well, what if 19th century battle shipheads could talk!
