ARTIST STATEMENT

Drawings
My pastel drawings celebrate the simplicity of an artful sketch and cut through the genre to find the essence of a people or place. They look to find a familiar connection in what may be an unfamiliar culture. I'm influenced by Color Field Painters and Minimalism. The way I feature a strip of intense color into an otherwise minimal sketch is called "Color Stream". I designed this style to catch the viewer off gaurd enough for him to want to take a second look, giving him the chance to find his own connection with the subject.

Paintings
My mixed media painting combines realism, letterism and symbolism to portray my subjects' mood, culture, personality, history and concerns. Through this "Essence-ology" method, I capture the essence of a person, rather than just physical appearance. I'm influenced by Australian Aborigine Dreamtime thinking, that the past is relevent and ever present, communicating, mixing with the dynamic events, personalities and philosophies of today, as if carried by the wind, a ripple of water, or these fluid washes of paint.

I see each painting as a conversation with the viewer. I begin the communication with saturating color and free flowing shapes, to spark the viewer's interest on a primal level, asking such questions as, "What shape is laughter?, What texture is hunger?, What color is the sound of a trumpet blast?" The suggestive style evokes the viewer's personal feelings, memories and opinions, and lets them mingle with glimpses of specific information. This conveys universal ideas that are interpreted in individual ways. As in a conversation, the viewers take away the most meaning from my paintings when they allow their own ideas and obseravtions into the process.

Statues, buildings, and familiar objects can hold reference to historic events and ideologies. I find parallels between strategies on the chess board, or fencing matches, and strategies in historic battle to be interesting. These paintings are about circular, not linear time, and ancestors staying with us. The saying is "if walls could talk". Well, what if 19th century battleshipheads could talk!

Congressional Portraits
I get so much fulfillment from working with the Congressmen and Senators. I interview them to learn why they entered public service, their personal driving forces, and what their role is, while faced with Americans' current concerns. I work with them to express their views in terms of aesthetics that are personal to them, and incorporate their philosophies into the completed portrait.
